Growing Season: 2017 was the first year of a more normal rainfall pattern for the Central Coast and Southern California. Santa Ynez received approximately 13 inches between December and May. The vines had a good fruit set with normal crop levels. The average daily temperature ranged from 70-87F over the course of the growing season with 20-39 degree diurnal swings from April through October. October was the hottest month of the year with average daily temperatures of 87F and nights that averaged 48F.

Vineyard: Estelle is located in the Los Olivos District of Santa Ynez Valley. It features slowly rolling hills and is planted to multiple varieties on vertical shoot positioning trellis in multiple row orientations. The Sangiovese has five foot in row spacing with 11 feet between vines. The Sangiovese clone is Rodino and it is grafted to 1103P root stock.

Winemaking: The fruit was hand-picked just after sunrise on a chilly 36 degree morning. It wash and-sorted, destemmed, and gently crushed. After a three day cold soak domesticated yeast was introduced. The juice spent a total of 14 days on the skins and was dry at pressing. It was racked off the gross lees and finished malolactic fermentation in neutral oak barrels. The wine spent 10 months in neutral oak barrels before blending with 6% Syrah and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon just prior to bottling. Aged an additional 3 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes: Incredibly dark in the glass with a huge nose of pomegranate and cherry. Classic Sangiovese cherry notes give way to a darker black damson fruit body with medium plus tannins and a clean finish. Freshness and lively acidity is present throughout the wine. Drink through 2022.
